Individual Banjo Tabs For Sale
[Return to top of page]Why choose a Tom Adams tab when the same songs are available elsewhere?
1. Melody
2. Accuracy
3. "It sounds like the song when I play the tab"
Are the tabs in this section of the website geared toward a particular level of player?
No. These tabs show how I would really play the tune in a jam session where I was clearly trying to bring out the melody while using the rolls and licks associated with the bluegrass banjo sound made popular by Earl Scruggs.

Details: The tab contains 2 banjo breaks, each with the full verse and chorus. The 1st Break stays close to the melody as often sung by Bill Monroe. The 2nd Break, while still melody-based, is a tasteful variation, notably in Measures 44-45, where the break changes octaves on the words "keep on shining". Measure 56 features the high note that Bill Monroe would sometimes sing on the word "high", and Measure 64 features a Scruggs lick played over the D chord.

73 measures
Details: The tab contains 2 banjo breaks, each with the full verse and chorus and each following the melody as the song is sung on classic recordings such as the one by The Brown's Ferry Four. This is a great example of breaks which combine
long (quarter) notes and short (eighth) notes to create a sound that makes the banjo "sing" the tune.

Style: Scruggs-style/Tom Adams-style 3-finger banjo playing
Key of G
G Tuning, gDGBD
51 measures
Details: The tab contains 3 banjo breaks. The 1st Break lays down a clear melody, assisted by Scruggs licks during the C chord, and leading into and during the D chord. The 2nd Break is a "fancier" break with backward rolls on a C7 chord and a much "busier" third line than the 1st Break. The 3rd Break is an example of a solo that is both tasteful and "hot" in terms of the phrasing and note choices, a good solo for leading into the final vocal section where a "hot" break may be just the ticket.

66 measures
Details: The tab contains 2 banjo breaks, each with the full verse and chorus. The 1st Break follows the melody as sung by Vernon Dalhart on a 1927 78 rpm record on the
Victor label. The 2nd Break is a variation based on the 1st Break and moves away from the strict interpretation of the melody in several instances. Note Measures 61-62 where the melody on the words "shot Mr. Howard" is played an octave higher than the surrounding measures in that break.

Details: The tab contains 3 banjo breaks. The 1st Break follows the melody closely and has the pick-up notes suitable to kick off the song. The 2nd Break still stays close to the melody but is a busier and hotter break than the 1st. The 3rd Break starts with a rhythmic variation and uses backward rolls on the C7 both times, first at the third fret and later at the 8th fret, all the while supporting the melody.

Details: The tab contains 3 banjo breaks. The 1st Break can be used for the Kickoff to the song as the melody is clearly evident in each of the tune's 4 lines. The 2nd Break, while still strongly melody-based, features variations leading into the C chord and again on the 4th line into the D chord. The 3rd Break is yet another example of working around the melody with tasteful variations that support the main theme.

Details: The tab contains 3 banjo breaks. The melody is plainly evident in the 1st Break while in the 2nd Break, variations on the C chord and in the 4th line are present. The 3rd Break takes more liberties with the melody throughout all 4 lines, making this a good example of a break that would appear near the end of the piece once the melody had been firmly established by the preceding instrumentalists and singers.

Style: Scruggs-style/Tom Adams-style 3-finger banjo playing
Key of G
G Tuning, gDGBD
51 measures
Details: The tab contains 3 banjo breaks. The 1st Break is based on Earl Scruggs' playing on the 1962 version of the song by Flatt & Scruggs. The 2nd Break shows how Tom Adams has played the tune for many years, having learned it from Flatt & Scruggs, but not playing it note for note. The 3rd Break is a variation played in a style compatible with the first two breaks. The melody is still plainly evident while the note choices that differ from the melody will tastefully complement an earlier solo. Recommended to be played not as a kickoff to the song but later in the song once the melody has been firmly established.
